Late one night you may be watching TV and you may come across some sort of documentary show where it appears as though two men are fishing, there's narration and everything. This may or may not actually be the case. John Lurie is no fisherman, and may never have caught a fish in his entire life. But, in Fishing With John, he soldiers on for six episodes hunting such diverse prey as shark, giant squid, and a chicken fish, which, because the same kinds of fish are called by different names all around the world, is in France called a Cheese Fish. Lurie, a bohemian from the band The Lounge Lizards and sometime actor in small, gemlike movies such as Down By Law, was able to attract some unlikely co-hosts. Dennis Hopper, Willem Dafoe, and Matt Dillon are a little more than half of the co-hosts. The other fraction is comprised of Tom Waits and Jim Jarmusch. Five of them for six episodes. As you're falling asleep with an episode on your television you may come suddenly awake, asking yourself, "Did the narrator just say he'd love a bite of my sandwich." You stare at the sandwich in your hand. Yes. Yes he did.
You may find the entire series collected into one handsome DVD from The Criterion Collection at Amazon or anywhere else you tend to find DVDs. I like to go to The Virgin Megastore, but only really ever buy the Ten Dollar Sale ones, and I don't think you'll find it there, anyway.

I love it when John and William DaFoe die while ice-fishing. Who wrote this entry, by the way?
We believe this piece was handed in by Mantle "The Man" Golden. A follow up to Willem Defoe and Lurie dying at the end of his episode: Lurie comes back to life for the Hopper episodes. The narrator, sheepishly, confesses he must have been wrong.
wow. Thanks for the info.
John Lurie is also an awesome artist, and his hilarious paintings were at PS1 awhile ago. But you can also see them here: http://www.johnlurieart.com/art/
The beauty is in the titles.
